I've
had Eudora for ages so I'm a die-hard at wanting to stick with it
through thick and thin. Since my internet provided email has had
too many quirks the past year, I opened a free Gmail account at
google last year. When I went away for a few days and had to access
gmail from a different computer, via web browser, I'd forgotten
my password and had to change it. When I came home and tried to
get email, all h*** broke loose with errors and I couldn't get my
mail. Swearing. Well, duh, I changed my password.
Eudora
doesn't provide an easy way to change the password on multiple "personalities"
or pop email accounts. My internet provided email is the "main"
account setup in Eudora - Tools - Settings, so I couldn't just go
in there to change the gmail password. The right-click menu on personalities
(extra pop accounts) doesn't give you a means of changing your password.
So I deleted my gmail personality, and re-created it new. That didn't
work either. I continued to get time out settings and my email would
not be retrieved from gmail. More swearing.
I really
would like to continue to rely on my gmail and I have a large number
of people I've told I prefer they use that address. So here I found
myself telling them all to use my other email addresses. But, I'm
not one to give up.
I tried
changing settings from what I'd written down that I had all items
set at before I deleted and re-created my gmail personality; I tried
searching the internet for help on eudora and gmail.
Nothing worked, but darn it I kept trying and shazaam! I got it
to work tonight. I decided after seeing other posts out there with
people frustrated on getting the error message that it is timing
out etc., to post this page in the event my settings may be helpful
to someone else.
My operating
system: windows XP Home SP2
Eudora Ver. 7.1.0.9 Sponsored mode
Gmail POP email account
I am assuming
you already have your gmail account and know a bit about making
additional personalities in Eudora. Accessing your personalities
properties / settings by right clicking on the personality of choice.
1. Login
to your gmail account and navigation to your gmail inbox. In the
upper right, click on the link that says "settings." (image
below)

2. Click
on "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" link. (image below)

3. Select
a POP setting, such as "enable POP for all mail." THEN
click on "SAVE CHANGES" button at bottom. (image below)

4. Log
out of Gmail after clicking 'save settings'.
5. Go
to Eudora, right click your personality for your google "gmail"
account, Generic Settings tab, and select settings as below. Of
course your own name/gmail ID where it says youremail / your name
etc. NOTE: I found a help file that said to select submission port
587. If my settings do not work for your version of Eudora, by all
means give that a try. It worked for me to NOT select that setting.

6. Below
are my settings in the Incoming Mail tab. Note that I had to select
"Required, Alternate Port" in this section in order for
my error messages to stop. Other than that, the rest of these settings
were what I had before.

7. Click
OK to finish editing your Personalities properties for your gmail
account. You can close and restart Eudora if you'd like but when
I got these settings just right, my email downloaded from gmail
without error.
Good
luck! I hope this helps someone out there. Not all computers are
the same and you may have firewalls or email scanners interfering;
and / or you may have different versions of Eudora. This is just
what worked for me and I hope it might work for someone else having
this problem I had tonight.
